Aims – Know the complex nature and background of TMD, airway and
breathing. Understand the components of aesthetics in orthodontics and
the psychological element. Be aware of the medico
orthodontics as well as the local guidelines.
Objectives – Understand the physiology of the TMJ. Know the various
symptoms and treatment aspects of TMD and its complex nature.
Understand airway physiology and how orthodontics can affect the
breathing. Understand the complex nature of aesthetics and the
importance of involving the patient early as well as review basic dental
psychology and its importance in orthodontics. Understand the general
review on medico legal responsibilities related to orthodontics,
consequences and management options with emphasis on contemporary

Postgraduate Award in Aesthetic Orthodontics
Due to digital dentistry more general dental practioners are providing orthodontic treatment to their patients, both young and old, with demand being driven by new invisible tooth alignment modalities. Dentists keen to participate in this growing area should be aware of their own limitations, have the skills to identify suitable patients and have the ability to provide adjunctive simple orthodontic fixed appliances when indicated. Instruction follows the General Dental Council’s training standards which require dentists to be appropriately trained and competent.

The objective of the postgraduate award is to provide dentists with the essential knowledge and clinical skills for the delivery of competent, high-quality orthodontic care and also receive credit for their training.

Course Features
The postgraduate award in orthodontics is for general dentists considering or already providing orthodontic treatment. This year course blends theory with clinical participation and comprises of ten teaching days, each of which is based on a specific theme underpinning orthodontic practice. Attendance is required only one Friday of each month over the year. The postgraduate award course delivers sound teaching in the theory and predictable practice of orthodontics in the general practice environment. It aims to produce knowledgeable general practitioners and comprises lectures, demonstrations, facilitating seminars and problem solving clinical sessions. Through lectures, group work, discussions and hands-on typodont training participants are introduced to the concept of fixed appliance therapy and given a clinical overview of orthodontic techniques in the school’s teaching clinics.
Upon completion of the course you will be able to:
1. Promote and appropriately advise prospective orthodontic patients.
2. Confidently treat and identify cases suitable for non-specialist orthodontic practice.
3. Understand the fundamental principles, theory and safe practice of orthodontics.
4. Confidently diagnose, treatment plan and appropriately refer specialist cases.
CPD Certificate
In addition to the postgraduate award granted on completion of the year course you will also receive a CPD certificate for six hours for every day attended.
